Printing Bar Codes

Sesame has the capability to print out bar codes. This allows a lab group to efficiently track samples in production. This can be of particular importance to high throughput projects. The Lab Master is able to define multiple ets of bar codes for use at different stages of the project (and which are accessible through different views in Sheherazade). Currently, Sheherazade supports the use of specialized bar code printers capable of understanding the ZPL II programming language. Fortunately, most users (ie, everyone but the Lab Master) will not need to know anything about ZPL II in order to produce bar codes. If the bar coding options available to your lab group do not meet your needs, please inform your Lab Master.

To print a bar code, open the appropriate record on the Board and select BarCode. In the window that appears, select the set of bar codes that apply and then specify any suffixes that are appropriate (in general, suffixes can be used to distinguish between different sets of primers ordered for a single work group or different intermediate products of the protein purification process, etc). Depending on how the Lab Master has configured the bar codes, selecting a suffix may not be necessary. The user can also select the number of bar code labels to be printed. In some cases, it will be possible to enter specific information unique to the current set of bar codes to be produced. The process is completed by specifying the printer and clicking OK.
