History. The current Sesame system is an outgrowth of a project designed by John Markley and Eldon Ulrich in Biochemistry and Miron Livny and Yannis Ioannidis in Computer Sciences for the development of a "desk-top experiment management system for biomolecular NMR". The original project, which was supported by an NSF grant, made use of experimental software tools under development in the Computer Sciences Department. However, we found that these experimental tools were not robust enough to deliver reliable results in a laboratory environment. Hence, Zsolt Zolnai spearheaded a de novo software effort, the current Sesame system, based on commercial software packages. This project has been funded continuously by NIH grant P41 RR02301 from the National Center for Research Resources, which supports the National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison. A four-year supplement to this grant, which expired at the end of February 2003, enabled NMRFAM to accelerate the development of the NMR portions of Sesame. This supplement also provided funds for a professional review of the tools and their acceptance by users. This review, which was conducted by the LEAD Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was useful in helping the Sesame Project Team overcome barriers to wider acceptance of the software. Starting in October 2001, additional funding for Sesame was obtained through NIH grant P50 GM64598 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which supports the Center for Eukaryotic Structural Genomics (CESG). These funds made it possible to expand Sesame to handle additional steps involved in structural proteomics, with structures determined by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The Sesame Project Team is beginning to collaborate with other groups interested in using this technology and in assisting to guide its future development. Interested parties are invited to contact Zsolt Zolnai.
